Trim with the pro edit grammar
How to blade, ripple, roll, slip and slide in the Horoptic timeline: the keys, what to drag, and what stays put.
Trimming is manual editing, so it works in a Local project with no account and no connection. Keys below are the defaults; if you chose another preset, find any command under Keyboard shortcuts… in the command palette (⌘K). On Windows, ⌘ is Ctrl and ⌥ is Alt.
Split a clip (blade)
- Select a clip and park the playhead inside it.
- Press S (Split clip at playhead), or right-click the clip and choose Split at playhead.
- To cut every track at the playhead, use ⇧S (Blade all tracks).
Trim or ripple a clip edge
- Point at a clip’s left or right edge until the cursor changes, then drag. A plain trim changes only that clip. Hold ⌥ while dragging to turn snapping off.
- To ripple, hold ⇧ as you start the drag, or switch on Ripple in the timeline toolbar. Later clips on the same track shift with the edge; other tracks stay put.
- For frame-exact trims, select the clip, tab to an edge and nudge it with ← and → (⇧ for ten frames).
- To remove a clip and close its gap, select it and use ⇧⌫ (Ripple delete), or choose Ripple delete from its right-click menu.
Roll, slip and slide in the seam
The seam opens one cut into a larger trim view under its track, marked TRIMMING.
- Select a clip, move the playhead near the cut, and press T (Open · close the seam). It opens at that clip’s cut nearest the playhead.
- Point at the lane strip at the top of the seam. Each zone names itself before you press:
- ROLL THE CUT, on the cut: moves both points; nothing after shifts.
- TRIM OUT and TRIM IN, just either side of the cut: move one edge. With Ripple on, they read RIPPLE OUT and RIPPLE IN, and everything after on the track shifts.
- SLIP THIS CLIP, further into either clip: moves the content; the clip holds its place.
- SLIDE THIS CLIP, on the SLIDE RAIL along the bottom, away from the cut: moves the clip; its neighbours absorb it.
- Drag left or right. The frames either side of the cut update live; the edit lands when you let go, and the seam stays open.
Trim from the keyboard
- Arm a verb at the cut: Y for slip, N for roll, U for slide, R for ripple. A closed seam opens first.
- Type a frame count (12 or −12) or seconds and frames (1:12), then press Return. A roll shows two cells, one for each side of the cut.
- [ and ] step to the previous or next cut on the track, and the seam follows.
- Escape clears a typed figure, then closes the seam. T closes it too.
⌘Z undoes any trim.
