Grade a clip with a LUT
How to load a .cube LUT onto a clip in Horoptic, shape the grade with the wheels and sliders, and read the scopes.
Grading is manual editing, so it works in a Local project with no account and no connection.
Open the Color tab
- Select a clip on a video track. On any other track the tab says “Color grading applies to clips on a video track.”
- In the Inspector, choose the Color tab. If the Inspector is parked, ⌥2 (Park · open the Inspector) brings it back. On Windows, ⌥ is Alt.
Apply a .cube LUT
- Scroll to the LUT section and open the picker. It reads None until a LUT is set.
- Choose Load .cube… and pick your file. The LUT goes onto the clip and joins the picker list, next to the built-in looks.
- Drag Intensity to blend the LUT with the picture underneath it.
- Use the switch beside the picker to turn the LUT off and on without losing it. Choose None in the picker to remove it.
If the file cannot be read, you see “Couldn’t read that .cube LUT”. A grid too large to load is refused with a message naming the largest one supported.
Shape the grade
- BASICS: Exposure, Contrast and Saturation.
- WHEELS: LIFT, GAMMA and GAIN. Drag a wheel’s outer ring up or down to change its value; hold ⇧ for finer steps. Drag inside the disc to tint that range: the direction sets the hue and the distance from the centre sets the amount.
- WHITE BALANCE: Temp and Tint.
- Balance colour sets exposure and white balance from the clip’s own frames. Contrast and saturation are left alone.
- TONE: Highlights and Shadows.
- Below the LUT: SPLIT TONE and CURVES.
To undo one control, double-click its label. On a wheel, double-click the ring to reset its value, the disc to clear its tint, or the wheel’s label to reset both. Reset grade puts the sliders and the three wheel values back to neutral and keeps your LUT. ⌘Z undoes any single change.
With a wheel focused, the arrow keys work too: ↑ and ↓ change the value, ← and → turn the hue, ⇧↑ and ⇧↓ push the tint in or out, and Home clears the tint.
Once the clip has a grade, Save grade as preset… appears beside Reset grade.
Read the scopes
The SCOPES section sits at the bottom of the Color tab. It reads the finished picture, every visible track after the grade, and updates as you work.
- Two scopes show side by side: WAVEFORM and VECTORSCOPE when you start.
- Click a chip above a scope to swap it for WAVEFORM, VECTORSCOPE, HISTOGRAM or PARADE. Chips you have not picked show short names (WF, VECTOR, HIST).
- PARADE takes the whole row and shows the red, green and blue channels side by side. Pick another scope in that slot to get the pair back.
