Add captions to a clip

How to add captions in Horoptic: type them in the Captions tab, time and style them, and export them burned in or as a .srt file.

Updated October 2026

Writing captions by hand is manual editing, so it works in a Local project with no account and no connection.

Add a caption

  1. Select a clip on a video track. On any other track the tab says “Captions apply to clips on a video track.”
  2. In the Inspector, choose the Captions tab. If the Inspector is parked, ⌥2 (Park · open the Inspector) brings it back. On Windows, ⌥ is Alt.
  3. Under ON THIS CLIP, click Add caption and pick a type. Subtitle is the one for spoken words; the picker also offers lower thirds, title cards and more.
  4. The new caption spans the whole clip, and its controls open under EDIT CAPTION.

If the clip’s speed is not 1×, the tab asks you to reset the speed first.

Type and time it

  1. Type the line into the Caption field. It is saved when you click away.
  2. Under TIMING, drag the two handles, or type frame numbers into IN and OUT. They count from the start of the clip, and each shows its timecode beside it.
  3. Each caption also appears as a chip in a lane under its track. Click a chip to edit it. Right-click it for Edit caption…, Duplicate, Move playhead here and Remove caption.

Style it

  • PRESET, at the top of the controls, applies a finished look in one click.
  • Reveal sets how the caption appears. Size picks S, M, L or XL.
  • Placement moves the caption with its arrow buttons; hold ⇧ for a bigger step. Once moved, a reset button puts it back at its type’s default spot.
  • Accent, Text colour, Stroke and Depth set the colours, the outline, and a shadow or glow.

Click Done when you finish. With a caption selected, ⌫ (Delete) removes it, and Remove all clears the clip. ⌘Z undoes any change.

Export with captions

  1. Click Export in the top bar, or press ⌘E (Export master).
  2. When the project has captions, the Captions band shows three switches: Burn into the picture, Embed a track in the .mp4 (or .mov), and Sidecar file. Burn and Sidecar start on.
  3. With Sidecar file on, pick .srt, .vtt or Both under Format. The file sits beside the video and carries Subtitle captions only; lower thirds and titles stay in the picture.

Captions from speech

Transcribe speech…, on a video clip’s right-click menu, is a paid cloud feature. It needs an account and the clip’s media in the Cloud. The Director proposes the transcript with its price, and it runs once you approve. The Director’s own turns are metered too. When the transcript lands, Auto-caption on the same menu adds Subtitle captions timed to the words, as one change ⌘Z undoes.
