Mix audio with the mixer
How to set clip gain, pan and fades in Horoptic, then balance tracks in the Mixer with faders, mute and solo, and automate volume.
Mixing is manual editing, so it works in a Local project with no account and no connection.
Shape one clip
- Select a clip and choose the Audio tab in the Inspector. If the Inspector is parked, ⌥2 (Park · open the Inspector) brings it back. On Windows, ⌥ is Alt.
- Drag Clip gain to set the clip’s level, from −60 to +12 dB. Click the number to type a value; double-click the label to go back to 0 dB.
- Normalize, just under it, measures the clip and sets Clip gain for you.
- Drag the Pan puck left or right. Click its readout and enter C, L45 or R45 for an exact value; double-click the label to centre it.
- On a video clip, the Muted switch silences its sound. ⇧M (Mute · unmute clip audio) does the same for the selected clip.
The LEVEL · L / R meter at the top of the tab shows the levels while you play.
Fade and duck
- Under FADES, drag the two handles in the drawing inward. The line above reads each fade in seconds.
- Once a fade exists, its label becomes a shape menu: Linear, Equal power, Smooth, Slow start and Fast start.
- Double-click the drawing to clear the fades.
- Under DYNAMICS, Duck under dialogue turns this clip down while dialogue plays. Amount sets by how much.
Balance tracks in the Mixer
- Click Mixer in the timeline’s toolbar. Each audio track gets a strip.
- Drag a strip’s fader. Its scale runs from −∞ to +3.5 dB, and the box under it reads the level. Double-click the fader’s handle to return to 0 dB. With it focused, the arrow keys step half a dB.
- Use the strip’s mute button (Mute track) or solo button (Solo track). While a track is soloed, each strip reads PLAYS or SILENCED.
- Each audio track’s header holds the same fader, mute and solo, so moving either moves both.
- The last line of each strip reads MASTER. Click it to send that track into another track instead.
If the Mixer has no strips, right-click a track header and choose Add audio bus.
Automate volume
- One clip: in the Audio tab, turn on Volume automation. A keyframe lane opens at the foot of the window. Click an empty spot to add a keyframe. Drag a diamond to change its level or its time. Press ⌫ to remove the selected one.
- A whole track: click the label at the top of its Mixer strip. The track’s lane opens; double-click in it to add a keyframe, or right-click the track header and choose Add point at playhead. Once a track has keyframes, its fader follows the curve and no longer drags. Clear automation, on the same menu, removes them.
⌘Z undoes any change.
